Conclusions
To access the prevalence of malocclusion of 6951 children(3,653 boys, 3,298 girls) of
mixed dentition periods aged from 6 to 12 years' living in Kwangju city of Korea, 3
statistical survey was done and the occlusal variations were observed as follows:
1. The prevalence of total malocclusion was 66.1% in boys, 64.4% in girls, and 65.3%
in total.
2. In 4538 malocclusion samples, Class I malocclusion was 30.9% in boys,28.5% in
girls, total 59.3%, and Class ¥± malocclusion was 13.2% in boys, 8.9% in girls, total
22.1% ,and Class ¥² malocclusion was 9.2% in boys, 9.4% in girls, total 18.6%.
3. Class I malocclusion of the total sample was 38.4% in boys, 39% in girls and
38.8% in total, and occurred more frequently compared to normal occlusion. Moreover,
class I malocclusion crowding was 46.2%, thus occuring more frequently in class I
malocclusion.
4. Class ¥± malocclusion of the total sample was 16.4% in boys, 12.2% in girls, and
14.4% in both sexes, and is in following descending order : Division 1, division 2, and
subdivision.
5. Class ¥² malocclusion of the total sample was 11.4% in boys, 13% in girls, and
12.1% in both sexes, and occurred more frequently compared to that of Caucasians.
6. The prevalence of total maloclusion by sex has no significant difference.
7. The occlusal variation by age and the prevalence of Class ¥°, ¥±, and ¥²
malocclusion by age had significant difference.
